As mentioned last week on a post about the competitive spirit, one of the best things about mountain biking is the diversity it has created over time. We now have everything from XC riding all the way to huge stunts in freeride. It is sometimes hard to believe, but less than 15 years ago…most of this didn’t exist. There was just bikes and dirt.
We want to know what area/style of mountain biking you call home. While a lot of us dive into different styles on a regular basis, there is always one area of the sport that we really consider to be our own at the end of the day. When you have the choice…where do you head?
Vote below and then discuss here.

Would be interested in what trails in the Southeast best represent “trail” and “all mountain” in your opinion. Seems as though there are lots of XC trails and a few downhill specific runs, but don’t see many drops on most of the trails we ride so not sure which trails we would call “Trail” or “All Mountain”. Raccoon has a few drops, outside of the Chunky section, would you consider Raccoon to be XC or Trail ?
I would consider the regular trails of Raccoon XC to Trail depending on the spot and Chunky would be AM but without the big climbs that are typically associated with that riding style.
The Pinhoti’s are XC in my opinion. Very groomed and fast/flowy. They actually host XC type events. When you get into Rich Mountain, that starts getting into the trail and light AM category with more technical riding.
So what do you consider to be the true AM trails in this area?
I rode Dark Mountain trails in NC this weekend and one section of the trail had a specific downhill section. It looked crazy. There was also a XC option and it had 3 jumps and was quite fun.
Wow, I’m the first one to vote for DJ. Funny thing is, I’m riding “it all” on a DJ hardtail, and not just the jumps themselves (there are no good DJ spots around here, in fact). I can do “technical features and drops up to 4 feet” on dirt till the sun sets and then hit the city with street trials the same night.
All Mountain (as defined by the inimitable Fabien Barel) ROCKS!! I don’t care if I take a little longer to get to the top (and I’m not interested in shuttles, quite happy to pedal my way up….) as long as I can drop my saddle and rip it up on the way down…!
