Magura MT7 Pro Disk Brakes

In for Review – Magura MT7 Pro Disk Brakes in Raceline Yellow

Back in the day…the Magura HS33 hydraulic rim brakes in raceline yellow were the holy grail of brakes for me. I couldn’t afford them back then but they always stuck in my head as one of those mountain bike components that was just a must have. The HS33’s had an incredible amount of stopping power and the signature yellow was a standout piece for your build. These really put Magura on the mountain biking map as almost every trials and downhill rider were using them.

I never was able to get my hands on a set but fast forward to now and Magura released a special edition of their MT7 Pro’s in raceline yellow. I just had to have a set and after a 2 month wait…they showed up on my doorstep. I should note…I no longer see the raceline yellow versions on the corporate or US website so they must be done with the limited part of these limited edition MT7’s. I must have gotten a set out of the last production run.

The Magura MT7’s are packed with every big of technology that Magura has to offer in their mountain bike lineup of disc brakes. They have the Carbotecture SL brake master for light weight and strength (polymers and carbon fibers). The radial master design also makes the brakes easier to modulate according to Magura.

The lever also features a one finger design that has a great hook on the end of it for a confident feel out on the trail.

The caliper is a 4 piston setup that is made of a single piece of forged aluminum. Magura claims that this gives the calipers increased rigidity and makes them one of the “strongest and most easily-modulated brakes on the market”.

The 4 pads are actually held to the pistons with magnets so there is no need for a spring like with other caliper designs. They literally just pull right to the piston and then you thread the top bolt in. That makes for some of the easiest pad removal/installation on the market.

The bleed process was straight forward and only took one go at it to get them properly setup. If you know how to bleed Shimano brakes and have some mineral oil laying around…you should be good to go.

I installed these brakes on my Trek Rail 9.8 in purple phase. At first, I thought these might be too bright and not match well with the color shifting color scheme of the Rail, but it actually came out looking pretty good. I had bought some of the purple rings to put in the calipers for a little big of color matching but I think I am just going to leave them yellow for now.

I’m looking forward to getting these out on the trail so see what they can really do. After a quick neighborhood bed in…they seem to have a ton of power that should be able to be controlled easily. With increased weight of the Rail (around 51 pounds right now), it should be a great test for brake fade and power.

Magura believes these are some of the best brakes on the market. Time will ultimately tell…
